At St Peter’s, the Geography curriculum is rooted in our core values of love, hope and wisdom, guiding children to become thoughtful and responsible global citizens. Through rich and varied learning experiences, we nurture a love for the natural world, inspire hope for a sustainable future, and develop the wisdom needed to make informed choices about the environment. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for caring for their world by exploring how to preserve and protect natural resources, both locally and globally. Our curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity about the world, helping children to ask questions, make connections, and develop a deep understanding of human and physical geography.
Beginning in the Early Years with the Understanding the World area of learning, children start to explore their immediate environment and recognise features of their surroundings. As they move through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, in line with the aims of the National Curriculum, they build on this foundation to develop locational and place knowledge, geographical skills, fieldwork techniques and a sense of scale—from their locality to the wider world. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to provide firm foundational skills in geography and enable children to commit key knowledge to their long-term memory, equipping them with the tools to interpret, understand and care for the diverse and dynamic planet they are part of.
