Physical Education at St Peter’s
At St Peter’s C of E Primary School, Physical Education plays a vital role in promoting the physical, emotional, and social development of every child. Our inclusive PE curriculum is built around two core programmes: the Champions for Sport scheme from Rising Stars and the Commando Joe resilience and adventurous activity programme. These high-quality schemes ensure that all pupils access a broad, balanced, and engaging physical education, fostering not only athletic ability but also resilience, teamwork, and leadership.
We are committed to inclusive practice, ensuring that our PE provision is fully accessible to pupils with Special Educational Needs. We actively use the S.T.E.P model (Space, Task, Equipment, People) to adapt lessons and provide appropriate levels of challenge for all learners, enabling every child to participate meaningfully and make progress in physical development.
PE begins in the Foundation Stage, where we emphasise gross motor skills, coordination, balance, and spatial awareness through structured and exploratory physical activity. This supports children in meeting their early learning goals while developing a love of movement and an early understanding of healthy lifestyles.
To ensure all pupils have the best opportunity to meet the national expectations for swimming by the end of Key Stage 2, we provide intensive swimming provision in Years 4, 5, and 6. This targeted support helps children develop essential water safety skills and swimming proficiency, enabling every child to feel confident and competent in the water.
In Year 6, pupils also take part in Bikeability training, working towards their Cycle Proficiency Awards. This equips them with the practical skills and confidence to ride their bikes safely on roads and promotes active travel as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Our curriculum is enhanced by a rich programme of extra-curricular clubs and sporting opportunities, many of which are team-taught or supported by our teaching support staff. These clubs provide pupils with additional opportunities to pursue their sporting interests while offering valuable CPD for staff, helping them to upskill and grow in confidence when delivering core PE lessons.
To further inspire and reward our pupils, we offer end-of-term sporting enrichment experiences, including aerial skills, boxing, skateboarding, dance, fencing, and many more. These experiences expose children to a wide variety of physical activities and inspire a lifelong love of sport and movement.
At St Peter’s, our vision is for every child to experience enjoyment, challenge, and achievement in sport—regardless of their starting point—and to leave us with the skills, values and confidence to live active, healthy lives.
