Mathematics

At St Peter’s Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality mathematics curriculum that enables every child to develop confidence, fluency, and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Our long-term plan ensures that learning is carefully sequenced from Nursery through to Year 6, providing a clear progression of knowledge and skills. The curriculum is structured to revisit and build upon core concepts such as place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, and geometry, while gradually introducing more complex areas including algebra, ratio, and statistics in upper Key Stage 2.

To support this journey, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work. This provides a consistent approach across the school, ensuring that children are exposed to small, manageable steps that build secure understanding over time. The scheme also places emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving, enabling pupils not only to perform calculations but also to explain their thinking and apply mathematical skills to real-life contexts. Each term’s content is planned to allow for consolidation and revisiting of prior learning, strengthening retention and mastery.

We also recognise the importance of developing fluency in multiplication facts, as these underpin so many aspects of mathematics. To support this, we use Times Tables Rock Stars, an engaging and interactive platform that helps children practise and secure their times table knowledge in a fun and competitive way. Regular use of this resource equips pupils with the rapid recall they need to succeed in more complex mathematical concepts as they progress through the school.

Overall, our mathematics curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive, and supportive, ensuring that all children are equipped with the mathematical skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education and beyond.
